As more films rely on computers for visual effects work (although at least one tentpole refutes the claim), the apparent artistry of make-up and practical effects seems to be unfortunately dwindling. We can now count seeing much less from another legendary titan in this field, as Rick Baker has retired. The man behind An American Werewolf in London, Thriller, The Exorcist, Videodrome, Gremlins 2, Men in Black and, yes, even Robert Downey, Jr.‘s make-up in Tropic Thunder, has announced his retirement. Check out his quote while on KPCC (via Screen Relish) below.
“First of all, the CG stuff definitely took away the animatronics part of what I do. It’s also starting to take away the makeup part. The time is right, I am 64 years old, and the business is crazy right now. I like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do, so I just decided it is basically time to get out. I would consider designing and consulting on something, but I don’t think I will have a huge working studio anymore.”
To honor his work, aside from popping in some of his films, we can think of no better way than by taking a personal tour of his collection. Today brings two different versions of such an opportunity. The first is a recent one which goes through his props, puppets, and animatronics and includes an extensive chat with the multi-Oscar winner himself. The other is a bit more candid, coming from a fan perusing his legendary work. Check out both below, along with Baker’s tweets heralding a “new chapter.”
I'm so surprised and touched by the number of tweets about my retirement. Thanks you all. I feel loved and appreciated.Who could ask 4 more

I want you all to know that I will continue creating for as long as I am able to. I am excited for this new chapter of my life.
