Not only does August bring us highly-anticipated sci-fi films such as Elysium and The World’s End, it will also see a handful of festival favorites arriving in theaters. We’re greatly looking forward to The Grandmaster, Short Term 12 and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints hitting screens and now we’ve got the first trailer for another acclaimed independent drama, The Spectacular Now.
Directed by Smashed‘s James Ponsoldt, the coming-of-age drama teams him with the writers of 500 Days of Summer, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. In our glowing review from Park City, we said this is a rare entry into the genre, as it “doesn’t simply take a snapshot of some of the most important years of development, but rather echoes the consequences of complex life-changing choices.” Check it out below, along with the first poster, for the film starring Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Elizabeth Winstead.
Sutter Keely lives in the now. It’s a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he’s never far from his supersized, whisky-fortified 7UP cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky hovering over him. Not a member of the cool crowd, she’s different: the “nice girl” who reads science fiction and doesn’t have a boyfriend. She does have dreams, while Sutter lives in a world of impressive self-delusion. And yet they’re drawn to each other.
The Spectacular Now opens on August 2nd.
