After helming the thrilling double dose of Elite Squad and its sequel, Hollywood finally caught on to the talents of Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha, letting him test the studio waters with a reboot of RoboCop. While that film won’t arrive until early next year, The Hollywood Reporter has news on what the director is eying next.

Moving over to Warner Bros., he’ll be going from the fantastical to reality, as the helmer has been set up with an adaptation of the true crime story The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia. Shortened to simply The Brotherhood, the film is based on the aforementioned novel from Guy Lawson and William Oldham and follows “two corrupt detectives, one working surreptitiously for the Luchese crime family, the other for the Gambino family. For years the men threw cases, scrapped evidence and even killed.”

While it sounds like something out of Martin Scorsese‘s The Departed, or more appropriately, Infernal Affairs, that isn’t a bad stepping stone. Padilha showed exceptional craft with his Brazil-set films, especially in this genre, so we’re greatly looking forward to seeing what he brings to this project. Scripted by Bill Dubuque (of the upcoming Robert Downey Jr. drama The Judge), hopefully we’ll get confirmation that this will be Padilha’s next project soon.

Have you read the source material? Is the director a good fit?
