It was only a few weeks when director Neill Blomkamp shared some concept art for a potential new Alien film, but it was unconfirmed if it was in any sort of official capacity. Now it looks like we may see some of those designs come to life, as it’s now been confirmed by 20th Century Fox that the District 9 helmer will develop the script and direct a new installment in the franchise.
According to LA Times, it will take place after the story line of Prometheus 2, which is still on track for a 2016 release with Ridley Scott directing. Scott, who is currently wrapping up production on The Martian, will produce Blomkamp’s film, but there’s no other details on what their stories (or characters) their films will continue, although we did see Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn pop up in the concept art.
If we had to wager a guess, every studio is currently at ways to expand their franchises into Marvel-esque interconnected universes and there’s strong possibilities for that when it comes to Alien, despite how one may feel about the films outside of the first two. As for Blomkamp, it feels like it’s the film he’s been building towards in his relatively short career thus far, so with a good script, we’d be interested in the results. In the meantime, check out the Chappie director’s comments (via Collider) from just last week when it was in the earlier stages, as well as his recent tweet confirming the news.
There was a reason. I wanted to make that film. I still may make that film. [Laughs] It may happen. But I did it on my own time. Like when Chappie was winding down in post and I had available time, I started to work on it. It was also from talking to Sigourney [Weaver] during the making of this. I mean, I asked her about Alien all the time. Alien and Aliens are my favorite films. So I genuinely wanted to make that film, I came up with the story, I came up with way more art than I put out and I never officially spoke to Fox about it, but Fox wanted to make it. So, I kind of touched on it and I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t know if I was just gonna go leave directing for a whole bunch of time and then I was like, ‘I might as well put some art out.’ But I may make it. I don’t know. That’s where it stands.
What would you like to see from a Blomkamp-directed Alien?
