As Christopher Nolan moves from project to project, he welcomes reuniting with his collaborators, including Michael Caine, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy. But as he puts together the ensemble for his sci-fi epic Interstellar, our first confirmed cast member has us thinking he’ll be going in a different direction.

After being rumored for the role last week Matthew McConaughey has accepted the lead role in the upcoming project. Speaking to the Star Tribune (via CHUD), he simply said “I’m confirming,” when asked about his involvement in the film. There’s no other details regarding his role, but it was previously revealed that he’ll be playing a key character named Cooper.

The story “depicts a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest borders of our scientific understanding.” It is described as a “complex and multi-layered” sci-fi picture that follows “explorers [who] travel through a wormhole,” with conceits such as alternate dimensions and time travel working their way in. His brother Jonathan Nolan delivered the original script, based on theories developed by Caltech physicist Kip Thorne, then the Inception director then took his brother’s draft and merged his own ideas into it.

Interstellar hits regular theaters and IMAX on November 7th, 2014.

Are you looking forward to McConaughey leading this project?
