With his latest Verbinski/Bruckheimer collaboration seeping into theaters and sequels to Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the Caribbean next on his docket, we don’t expect Johnny Depp to enter into retirement anytime soon, but in a recent interview he at least hints towards a “not too far away” future that involves no moviemaking.
Speaking to a BBC reporter for The Lone Ranger, the actor, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, says, “At a certain point, you know, you start thinking … when you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year … and you realize you’ve said written words more than you actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking of that as an insane option for a human being.”
Despite those aforementioned sequels, Depp does have one promising feature on the horizon, taking part in Wally Pfister‘s directorial debut Transcendence. Starring alongside Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins Jr., Kate Mara and Paul Bettany, we recently got our first look at some behind-the-scenes footage, but now the official synopsis has landed.
Dug up by ScreenCrush, it adds some world-altering stakes (seemingly a requirement by tentpoles nowadays). It goes as follows; “Will Caster, forefather of A.I., has his consciousness uploaded onto the internet. Once there, is it really Will who is interacting with humanity in order to make things better, or a darker sinister clone bent on the termination of the world as we know it?” As we await further information from his April-bound sci-fi feature, check out the clip of Depp pondering retirement below, beginning around the 2:13 mark, and see another behind-the-scenes still from Transcendence.
What do you make of this new Transcendence info? Do you think it’s time for Depp to throw in the towel?
