Tucked away in the state of Washington, Valve Corporation has been churning out some of the best videogames the medium has to offer, from the Half-Life series to the many spin-offs, including Counter-Strike and Portal. Run by Gabe Newell, they’ve mostly stayed uninvolved in the happenings of Hollywood, despite the incessant rumors that one of their games will get the feature treatment.
Today, however, Newell had no choice but to interact with a major force in the filmmaking industry, as he sat down with none other than Star Wars: Episode VII director J.J. Abrams for a storytelling discussion at 2013 DICE Summit. While most of the talk reportedly stuck strictly to the topic at hand, they did briefly mention some future possibilities.
Before closing, Abrams said, “There’s an idea we have for a game that we’d like to work with Valve on,” according to Polygon. Newell responded, “We’re super excited about that and we also want to talk about making movies, either a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie.”
And that was it. There was no follow-up or confirmation of any sort and it’s silly to speculate further, but we can at least deduce that Newell is open to the idea of his properties hitting the big screen. Whether the person to adapt them is Abrams or not is yet to be seen, but if one wants to get a hint at what a Portal film may look like, check out Dan Trachtenberg’s fan short below.
