Just a day after finding his biological mother with Julia Ormond, Superman: Man of Steel has acquired another castmember. Director Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. are in talks with Christopher Meloni for an unknown, major role. The actor recently left Law & Order: Special Victims Unit after almost 300 episodes. [Deadline]

Meloni would join the cast which includes Amy Adams as Henry Cavill‘s love interest, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his human parents, and Michael Shannon as the baddie General Zod. Antje Traue plays Faora, the female villain. Russell Crowe was also recently added as Jor-El. With Christopher Nolan godfathering the project (but seemingly too busy now with The Dark Knight Rises shooting to have any involvement) and David Goyer penning the script, we still have no confirmation of what the plot will entail.

Meloni is a great character actor that has previously appeared in such films as 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as well as regular stints on Oz and NYPD Blue. Without knowing his role, there isn’t much to say, but he is a good addition to a surprisingly strong cast. I just have to worry about Snyder now, coming off his critical and financial bomb Sucker Punch.

Man of Steel is expected to have a late 2012 release with production beginning next month.

What do you think about Meloni joining the Man of Steel cast?
