Premiering on this day in 1968, Stanley Kubrick‘s 2001: A Space Odyssey still remains an unparalleled marvel of filmmaking. Ahead of its time, one still hasn’t quite experienced the director’s crowing achievement unless they’ve seen it on the big screen (preferably in 70mm), and with frequent repertory screenings depending on your location, thankfully that’s still on option.

To celebrate its release, our friend Larry Wright (who runs @refocusedmedia, an must-follow resource for anyone interested in filmmaking) has scoured the internet and delivered 100 behind-the-scenes stills of the production, diving deep into virtually every location of Kubrick’s immense undertaking.

We’ve also included a 45-minute documentary The Making of a Myth, serendipitously released in 2001, narrated by James Cameron and featuring interviews with Arthur C. Clarke, Keir Dullea, Douglas Trumbull and more, as they explore the production of the space epic. Reflect on the anniversary of a masterpiece by checking out both below.
