With their built-in userbase, one of the benefits of the Netflix model is that — compared to the Hollywood strategy of previewing every notable scene from their latest tentpole before hits theaters — they can release a new movie or show with relatively little build-up and then have it explode in the culture soon after it debuts. We saw it recently on both the fiction (Stranger Things) and non-fiction side (Making a Murderer) and now they hope to have another in the same vein with The OA.

First announced a year-and-a-half ago, after a quiet production, Netflix has revealed the mysterious series will arrive this Friday and the first trailer has landed. Our main point of intrigue is centered around its creators, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, who last gave us the fascinating, intense thriller Sound of My Voice as well as upping their scope with the Ridley Scott-produced The East.

Directed by Batmanglij, who co-wrote and co-produced with Marling (who also stars), not a great deal of the plot is known, even after viewing the trailer, but it’s said to follow a blind woman who, after going missing for seven years, returns to home and then begins to recruit a high school math teacher and other students for a mission. It sounds intriguing enough that we’ll certainly tuning — or, rather, clicking play.

Also starring Jason Isaacs, Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Will Brill, and Brandon Perea, check out the trailer below for the eight-part series.
