As he preps his English-language debut (featuring Jessica Chastain, no less), writer-director-actor-producer-editor Xavier Dolan found time to stop by TIFF for two features he’s involved in. One is his fifth directorial effort, Mommy, which premiered at Cannes, while the other is The Elephant Song, a drama he starred in alongside Bruce Greenwood and Catherine Keener (trailer). For the occasion, he sat down for a 25-minute discussion on not only both films, but his career thus far.
He talks about developing Mommy (which hits Quebec theaters this week and U.S. theaters early next year), a recent nervous breakdown, the deep relationship with his actors, reading every single review for his films and whether they help or hurt, directing screenplays he didn’t write, research for Laurence Anyways, and much more. Check out the conversation and images below and head over here to see the trailer and our review from Cannes.
