It’s been 10 months since I’ve seen the New Zealand vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows and it still remains one of the funniest films of the year (or rather next, when it’ll be released in the United States). Coming from writers and directors Taika Waititi (Boy) and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), it’s getting a U.K. release in late November and today we have the first six minutes, courtesy of The Guardian.
I said in my review, “Although the documentary style affords some off-the-cuff moments that don’t always land, the major gags result in significant laughs. The duo also makes sure to start small and amp up the scope with each new sequence. With a slim running time and considerable chemistry, What We Do in the Shadows is proof that the vampire genre is alive and well as long as it’s in the right hands.” To get an introduction to the hilarious ensemble, check out the opening below as we await news on an exact U.S. release date.
Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
