With endless live-action Johnny Depp collaborations, it is refreshing to see Tim Burton step away from his comfort zone, somewhat. We’ve got the first trailer for his stop-motion animation Frankenweenie today, which is based on his 1984 short. The animation style calls back to his heavy German expression tones, with the stark black and white contrast. I do wonder what the commercial prospects for a film like this one is, but it is getting the IMAX 3D treatment, so it will be widely available to audiences. The somewhat creepy story of a boy and his resurrected dog is also welcome treat compared to the usual cutesy offerings in children’s animation. Check it out below via Yahoo.
Synopsis:
From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.
Written and directed by Burton, the film features the voice talents of Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short and a script from John August. It will arrive in theaters on October 5th.
