He maybe kicking ass in theaters with Ghotocol this week, but Tom Cruise is getting his ’80s rock on in an upcoming musical. Based on the hit play, Hairspray director Adam Shankman has assembled quite an ensemble for Rock of Ages. Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand look to be having the most fun next to Cruise and there is also Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Ackerman, Mary J. Blige and Bryan Cranston.

I’m always up for actors stepping out of their comfort zone, but half of me thinks this isn’t too far removed from his Magnolia character. Shankman is one of our most commercial directors, so I don’t expect anything revolutionary here but everyone seems to be having fun. If you can stand some Jon Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard and more, it looks like you could do worse. Check out the trailer below via Apple.
