Re Assignment

Is it problematic or concerning that a film’s catalytic event is someone outraged over their forced gender reassignment surgery? You decide, as the new trailer for the Michelle Rodriguez-led The Assignment posits that exact question. After a hitman is double-crossed, he is captured by an enigmatic figure known as The Doctor (Sigourney Weaver) and turned into a… woman. Now, obviously, the only course of action is revenge — bloody, violent revenge.

While The Warriors is a cult classic, director Walter Hill has made some rather questionable films in the 40-odd years since, including his most recent effort, Bullet To The Head (a title I love, despite it bearing the content of one I don’t). Whether The Assignment will offer the gleeful iconography of Hill’s glory days, or fall into the $5 dollar bin next month is yet to be seen by this viewer. However, in our review from TIFF we said, it’s “ultimately canny in genre-play and unique in its time, factors that don’t necessarily make it great, but, beyond old-man-auteurism apologia, still hold somewhat of a flame in the modern age.”
