After watching the trailer for Michael Johnson’s first feature, All the Wilderness, I think it is safe to say that the movie will certainly have two things: 1) beautiful cinematography with some striking choices in color palette and 2) a metric ton of teenage angst. With the latter not unfamiliar in coming-of-age stories, All the Wilderness follows its main character James (played by Kodi Smith-McPhee) looking for his place in the world after the death of his father.

With a combination of teen drama and soul-searching — backed by a great soundtrack thanks to artists such as Sonic Youth, Ty Segall, Elliott Smith, and Sigur Ros –Johnson’s directorial career looks to be starting off strong. Also starring Virginia Madsen, Isabelle Fuhrman, Danny Devito, and Evan Ross, check out the trailer below for the February release.

Synopsis:

James (Kodi-Smit-McPhee) has shut himself off from his surroundings, falling into a world of imagination and darkness. Visits with his psychiatrist (Danny Devito) have proven unhelpful – though he takes a liking to fellow patient, Val (Isabelle Fuhrman). As James begins to rebel against his single mother (Virginia Madsen), he ventures into the night where he meets a mysterious kid (Evan Ross) who welcomes him into an eccentric city. Relationships are put to the test as James navigates unfamiliar territory, wrestling with the reality of his own personal wilderness.

All the Wilderness opens on February 20th in theaters and VOD.
