Deadline reports that Sony has hired Justin Malen to do a rewrite for their upcoming comedy The Manny. Don’t be alarmed if you’ve never heard of Justin Malen; a newcomer to the world of Hollywood, he sold his first script Bastards last summer to Paramount.
Apparently the buzz from that script has put him on the radar. As for the plot of The Manny, it goes something like this: a male college graduate can’t find a job in the world of finance so he tries to hustle his way in by being the nanny to the kid of a Wall Street bigwig. And since he’s a guy, he’s a “Manny.” Get it? I really hope Malen’s first order of business is to change that title, for the sanity of us all.
Since Bastards hasn’t had a production update yet, I can’t judge his writing ability but I’m going to be optimistic that he can work some comedy wonders. We need more talented comedy screenwriters out there, what with the threat of Grown Ups sequels and such.
Would you see a movie called The Manny?
