Update: Word has come in from Vulture that Scarlett Johansson actually replaced Samantha Morton in the role of the operating system. Jonze says, “Samantha was with us on set and was amazing. It was only in post production, when we started editing, that we realized that what the character/movie needed was different from what Samantha and I had created together. So we recast and since then Scarlett has taken over that role.” Check out the original story below.
Nowadays rarely does a film head into production without the public knowing the majority, if not all, of the cast members. Even rarer is the occasion when a project is nearly a year out of production and we’re just now getting new actors being announced in the ensemble.
Just last night we got the wonderful news that Spike Jonze‘s sci-romance has a release date of November 20th, and now two top-notch thespians have been revealed to part of the cast. According to distributors Warner Bros., in a tweet they revealed that Scarlett Johansson and Chris Pratt shot roles in the project.
There’s no details yet on exactly how they’ll fit in, but if one had to guess, Pratt is the only major male name outside of lead Joaquin Phoenix, so perhaps he is some sort of comedic relief, while Johansson joins Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde in the female lead roster. One can see the synopsis below for the Annapurna-produced film that will likely see a fall festival bow.
In the not so distant future, Theodore (Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.
What do you think of the cast additions?
