As more academy members and critics weigh in on 2011 in film, it is looking more and more likely that the Oscars will be bland showcase. The Screen Actors Guild announced their nominations today and outside of a surprise push for Bridesmaids and the well-deserved support for The Descendants, it isn’t looking good.

Dull Oscar fare like the The Artist, Albert Nobbs and J. Edgar were recognized in different categories, while the perfectly safe Midnight in Paris and The Help also cleaned up. It was nice to see Tilda Swinton get a Best Actress nod for We Need To Talk About Kevin, but other than that it seems to be a dry showcase.

Where is Michael Fassbender for his outstanding work in Shame? The excellent ensemble (or just Gary Oldman) of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy? Elizabeth Olsen‘s stunning debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene? The list goes on and on. Check out the disappointments below via indieWIRE, and I’m with Kris Tapley on this one, “Go ahead and mail the Oscar to The Artist. Wake me up next year.”
