After debuting to strong word at Sundance, FilmDistrict recently released the time-travel indie film Safety Not Guaranteed to limited theaters and now the filmmakers are already set for their next project. Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly showed much wit and charm, and most importantly a care for characters in their debut, which stars Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass and Jake Johnson.
Deadline reports that duo are getting together again with the production company Big Beach for a film titled The Ambassador (no relation to Sundance’s other comedy of the same name). They’re both scripting, with Trevorrow returning to the director’s seat and one can see a synopsis below:
The film is set in the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs, which not only monitors the universe for signs of life but is prepared to represent humanity if and when aliens arrive on earth. A shy, low-ranking staffer unwittingly makes first contact when he meets a mysterious beautiful woman and must risk more than his job when they are threatened by forces of this world and beyond.
I love that they’re continuing with a sci-fi approach, wrapped into a relatively quaint human drama, also described as following a “pair of emotionally dysfunctional people forced into a situation beyond their control.” Big Beach added, “Colin and Derek are wonderful filmmakers who are able to take a big idea and find the emotion and humanity in it by humorously centering on complex characters confronting universal issues.
