Holy sh*t! That’s on the tame side of my current elation for this news story. Deadline reports that auteur director Nicolas Winding Refn will reteam with his Drive star Ryan Gosling on the Logan’s Run remake. Drive will be out this fall, but Refn is the man behind the striking arthouse films Bronson and Valhalla Rising. This remake is penned by Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Day Later, the upcoming Dredd).
Feature newcomer Carl Rinsch was developing the remake at Warner Bros, but left to do 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves. This remake of the 1976 futuristic drama follows “a man who tries to outrun a mandatory death sentence that awaits all 30-year old’s.” The project has been in the works for a long time at Warner Bros, with Bryan Singer attached to direct at one point before Superman Returns. Robert Schwenke (Flightplan, RED), James McTeigue (V For Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), and Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy) were all attached at one point, but it looks to be Refn’s gig, finally.
Adapted from the William F. Nolan novel, “Gosling will play Logan 5, a “Sandman” whose job it was to put to permanent sleep those who try to escape mandatory death, the downside of the blissful existence in the domed city that protects the inhabitants who survived a 23rd Century apocalypse.” For Drive, Gosling was able to pick any director he wanted for it, so he went with Refn. It must have went over well, because he is “eager” to reteam for this blockbuster.
Production on Logan’s Run begins this fall. Drive hits theaters September 16th, 2011.
Are you excited at the renewed possibilities of this remake, now that we have this talent involved?
