When you have a band like the Rolling Stones, you’re bound to have several documentaries made about craft, lifestyle and most obviously their music. Martin Scorsese gave the Stones the Hollywood treatment back in 2008 with Shine A Light, but they’ve had over 20 documentary films made about them over their expansive and long running career.
Deadline has reported that director Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays In the Picture) is formulating another feature to add to the mix. With plans of hitting theaters this September, the feature will be distributed by Eagle Rock Entertainment in order to coincide with the band’s 50th anniversary celebration.
The Stones will executive produce the project, with Victoria Pearman producing alongside Morgan Neville. The documentary will trace the evolution of the Stones from their beginning all the way back in 1962, and will also have exclusive access to their life on the road and behind the scenes footage. Morgen, who was nominated for an Oscar for his documentary On the Ropes, said the following about the project, “For anyone who wants to experience the band, this is the film that will defy convention and create a sonic tapestry to transport viewers into the world of the Rolling Stones.”
Not only does Morgen have Scorsese to compete with, Albert and David Maysles‘ Gimme Shelter, which chronicled the final weeks of the Stones‘ 1969 tour and the disastrous Altamont Free Concert, has generated a huge following and may be one of the best musical documentaries I’ve ever seen.
