ComingSoon reports that Platinum Studios, most notably the ones behind the graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens, are readying their follow-up: an adaptating of comic book The Weapon from New York Times bestselling author Fred Van Lente (who also wrote, you guessed it, Cowboys and Aliens).
The Weapon follows Tommy Zhou, a martial arts enthusiast who turns his knack for making solid objects from light into a superhero persona known as The Weapon. He bases The Weapon’s backstory on the ancient Chinese legends told to him by grandfather but it turns out that these legends were actually true and now ancient cult The Lin Kuie (Forest Dragons) are after him and his secret.
Now here’s the fun part: The Weapon was already announced back in 2009 while Platinum was in the midst of turning Cowboys and Aliens into a feature with David Henrie in the lead role (quite a whitey for an Asian American role). In fact Coming Soon themselves even reported it. I guess it’s safe to assume that Henrie is no longer attached and this attempt is something completely new since it’s been almost three years since that original announcement.
The Weapon itself doesn’t really sound like anything new or inventive, but I do love me some ancient Assassin cults and I’ll always be willing to give a martial arts movie a fair shake. Let’s just see if it goes anywhere this time.
Have you read The Weapon? Is it worth adapting?
