If you told me a few minutes ago that I would be excited for an Owen Wilson-led film, I would call you a liar. While he’s excelled in supporting roles as of late in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Inherent Vice, some “major” performances in The Internship and Are You Here have left much to be desired. But, with a genre change-up, it is true.

In the upcoming action-thriller No Escape, directed by As Above, So Below, Devil, and Quarantine director John Erick Dowdle, he takes the role of Jack Dwyer as he and his family move across the world to their new home in Southeast Asia. Luckily for them, soon after they arrive, the Dwyer family is thrust into an extremely violent political coup d’etat. Realizing he must protect his family, Jack, his wife, and their daughter, are forced to look for an escape route out of the country. With the help of Hammond (played by Pierce Brosnan), Jack’s family just might survive the putsch.

Based on the first trailer, it looks like a combination of Gareth EvansThe Raid along with bits and pieces of Taken thrown in there for good measure. It shows off what looks to be an extremely action-oriented and violent film, coupled with a side of Owen Wilson movie audiences haven’t seen since perhaps Behind Enemy Lines.

Also starring Lake Bell, Sterling Jerins, and Spencer Garrett, check out the trailer below.

In their new overseas home, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape in an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed.

No Escape arrives on September 2nd, 2015.
