If you’ve been on the internet for at least the last few years, then you could sense the changing landscape of movie funding, distribution and filmmaking in general, but yesterday, we hit a landmark. After years and years of failed attempts, Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas launched a Kickstarter in the hopes of funding a feature film version of his cult hit show. The goal was $2 million in 30 days, but instead the entire thing was funded in just over 10 hours, breaking a record for the fastest Kickstarter initiative to reach $1 million, as this one hit the mark in its fourth hour.
Now in its second day, with a total nearing $3 million amongst almost 50,000 donors, Warner Bros. has came through with its promising of green lighting the film, according to The Wrap. However, the studio will reportedly not be providing any additional funds for the production, instead relying solely on the money received from Kickstarter. Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will then take on the cost of distributing and marketing for an early 2014 VOD and limited release bow.
On one hand, it’s comforting to know that the project will be one solely funded from its fans, but many expected WB to chip in a portion, considering the proven support behind it. But with 29 days still left to go on the Kickstarter fundraising, we can expect the budget to continue to rise, as more rewards are added by Thomas and the film’s star, Kristen Bell. Expect many more updates on this one in the coming months, as the Kickstarter closes out and production begins in the summer.
Are you surprised Warner Bros. is not contributing to the production? Did you donate?
