Arnie is back — in Hollywood, that is. Our action hero returns to his first leading role in over a decade with The Last Stand this weekend, and judging from reviews, it’s a set to be a modestly good time. But Arnold Schwarzenegger is possibly setting his sights higher, to one of his most successful action franchises.

Back when Justin Lin was set to direct Terminator 5, Schwarzenegger himself was aiming to return in the lead role, and now we’ve got an update on the project. There’s no confirmation yet on what the story contains, including if the iconic actor is back for this iteration, but according to Deadline, Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) have been set by Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures to script this update.

It’s a team-up we wouldn’t have expected, but if Lussier  can provide some R-rated action fun, while Kalogridis nabs down some of the deeper psychological elements (something Cameron excelled with in his versions), then perhaps this project is on the right track. Our major interest still lies with Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna funding, which for the most part has stuck with more modestly-budgeted adult dramas like Killing Them Softly, The Master and Zero Dark Thirty. With the right creative team involved, we’d love to see what she can do in a bigger arena.

What do you think of these two screenwriters taking on Terminator?
