Although it was one my favorite films of last year, Todd Solondz‘s peculiar, touching Wiener-Dog sadly went overlooked. Thankfully, the director looks to be back in record time as his latest project has already been announced and he’s secured two unexpected, talented stars, which also doubles as The Counselor re-team we’ve been waiting for. Penélope Cruz and Edgar Ramírez are set to lead this new film, titled Love Child, according to Deadline.

Edgar Ramirez attends "London Film Critics' Circle Awards"The Welcome to the Dollhouse director’s own spin on the Oedipus complex will follow “11 year-old Junior, a delusional aspiring Broadway star with an inappropriate obsession with his mother Immaculada (Crus). After orchestrating an accident that nearly kills his abusive father, he encourages Nacho (Ramírez), the handsome man living in the family’s guesthouse to court his mother and become his new dad. But when the two fall in love, Junior becomes so jealous that he is no longer the subject of his mother’s attention that he hatches a plan to frame Nacho for his father’s murder.”

It certainly has the dark, twisted drama familiar in the world of Solondz and with the film already in pre-production with Killer Films, hopefully we see it by next year. The project will also hopefully mark a career upturn for Cruz, who, after last year’s bombs Zoolander 2 and The Brothers Grimsby, is also shooting Asghar Farhadi’s next film this year.
