Update: We might have to wait a bit longer for the film, as Montages reports from a conversation with Michael Haneke that he’s still searching for a lead actress. The director says it is now “uncertain” that production will begin this summer. Check out the original story below.

If one looks back at his career, particularly his last and most accomplished feature, Amour, one wouldn’t quite expect Michael Haneke to embrace social media (despite what a certain fantastic Twitter account would have you believe), but it looks like he’s set out to defy expectations. After gathering financing a few years ago, we now have confirmation as to what the Austrian master’s next feature will be.

Titled Flashmob, Film Comment reports that production begins this summer on the “multi-character drama partly set in the U.S.” Exploring “the fragile relationship between media and reality,” it will follow a handful of people who connect via the Internet and then unite at the end by a flash mob, one we imagine won’t be the normal ordinary of events.

The structure sounds similar to his 2000 drama Code Unknown, but we’ll have to await on more details and casting, which should be unveiled shortly. In the meantime, check out two excellent documentaries on the filmmaker.

What do you think of Haneke’s next project?
