In the early moments of It Follows, from the first notes of the score by Rich Vreeland (aka Disasterpeace), one knows they are in for a treat. The synth-heavy, chilling music perfectly matches the John Carpenter-esque vibe running throughout David Robert Mitchell‘s horror thriller, which is one of the must-sees of the year. Recently released in the UK and hitting U.S. theaters this week, the score is now available to stream in full.
“I scored a game called FEZ a few years ago. David loved the music and reached out to me via e-mail,” Vreeland recently said explaining his involvement. “Our initial discussions were straightforward; we talked logistics and expressed our interest in working together. David touched base early, right before he started filming I believe, and then we fell out of touch for about a year. When he came back to me, prepared to start scoring, I had a lot of projects on the table and was a bit strapped for time. I think I turned him down a few times, but he could tell that I wanted to work on it, and I eventually gave in. I’m glad I did! We initially talked about exploring an aesthetic with guitars and other acoustic instruments, but eventually we realized that by using synths we could make the scary parts and the not so scary parts still retain cohesion.”
