Although I’ve been a fan of him since his early Arrested Development days, some have complained about Michael Cera‘s “shtick” — perhaps one of the reasons he’s taken the last couple years relatively lightly when it comes to film output. However, his next project will certainly turn some heads as he’s going in a very different direction.
Almost 18 months ago we reported that the Scott Pilgrim star was lining up a film that would put him into psychological thriller, as well have him learning Spanish. The film, written and directed by Sebastian Silva, was shot on-location in Chile and while it was tentatively titled Magic, Magic, it looks like it will go under a new name. Although we don’t know what that will be, STYD has the first stills, which can be seen above and below, as well as the full synopsis for the film also starring Juno Temple, Emily Browning and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
A young American traveler named Alicia (Temple) while in the spectacular Chilean lake district, begins seeing disturbing images visible only to her. Her best friend Sarah (Browning) suddenly returns to Santiago, leaving Alicia in an unfamiliar country surrounded by strangers (Cera and Sandino Moreno). More and more she unravels, seeing darker visions and hearing chilling noises that send her running into the woods. In this disturbing landscape, she experiences crushing terror and knows that she must escape. A destabilizing, psychological thriller recalling the best works in the genre, this film entices viewers into a world they won’t be able to forget.
Expect Sebastian Silva‘s thriller to land in 2013 from Sony Pictures, with a debut on the festival circuit beforehand.
