Well, there goes any interest in our most-anticipated offering Marvel has had to date. After being attached to the project for many years — since 2006, to be exact — Edgar Wright has just dropped out of directing Ant-Man for the studio. In a statement, they simply say, “Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015.”
With that date looming, they reveal that a new director has already been decided and will be announced shortly. This is, of course, a bummer for those looking forward to the film, but with Wright’s particular vision kept in mind, it also seems like a blessing of sorts. We’d much rather see him take on a new project with full creative control rather than comply to Marvel’s fairly conventional standards. Let’s hope the new director is someone we can get behind, but more importantly, it’s not too long before Wright secures another project.
Update: Joss Whedon and James Gunn, the directors of Marvel’s next two tentpoles, have weighed in on the matter. See below.
