Wally Pfister — the Academy Award-winning cinematographer who has lensed every one of Christopher Nolan‘s films since Memento — has just landed his first directing gig at Alcon Entertainment. While this will be Pfister‘s first time behind the camera on a major motion picture, he has previously worked on commercial projects, including the much vaunted Montana Meth Project, which featured the likes of Darren Aronofsky and Alejandro González Iñárritu.
As reported by Deadline, Alcon has been looking to get Pfister in the director’s chair for quite some time. According to co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, their interest in Pfister began while working with him on Nolan‘s remake of Insomnia. “Wally is truly one of the most talented artists with whom we have ever collaborated,” the pair said in a statement. “To now have the opportunity to work with Wally as a director on this truly remarkable project, is a company highlight for Alcon Entertainment.”
What of the film itself, though? Unfortunately, the plot, characters, or even a basic log line are being kept hush-hush, leaving pretty much everything to the imagination. Even a title won’t come to the aid of the curious masses, as the screenplay is, as-of-yet, untitled. The scribe, Jack Paglen, is likewise a mystery, as this is his first feature.
Still, I’m interested in seeing what Pfister is capable of with more control. I love his work, and think it will be enlightening to see what kind of style he employs when in charge of more than just cinematography.
What about you? Does this news stir your imagination and whet your appetite?
