For his first film in four years, Will Smith has played it about as safe as possible, returning to a franchise that has brought in over $1 billion worldwide. We’ve already heard about the many production problems for Men In Black III, but the first trailer has arrived so it is time to judge the film on its own. And it isn’t look pretty, aesthetically speaking.
Director Barry Sonnenfeld and Sony are attempting to pull off 3D here and it looks to have effected their camera placement decisions. Most of the actors are smack dab in the middle of the frame with a lack of detail to production design, giving off less of a cinematic feel, and more of a made-for-TV one.
As for the humor, and the preview of the plot, I’m interested to see how things work when we transfer from Tommy Lee Jones’ world back to his younger self (played by Josh Brolin). I’ve heard that takes up most of the film, but it is only a short bit here. All-in-all, this is a disappointing piece, but hardly shocking for one of my least-anticipated blockbusters of next year. Also starring Alice Eve, Rip Torn, Emma Thompson, and Michael Stuhlbarg, Men in Black III will open on May 25th, 2012.
