The word is out on Kevin Smith’s preachy horror venture Red State, and that word is: meh.
But as he’s done before, Smith is already promising more (whether we ask for it or not). Via this horror feature’s end credits, he assures: “Almost the entire cast will return in Hit Somebody/ Coming over the boards in 2012.”
See, that’s clever because Hit Somebody is a movie about a hockey player. /Film reveals:
The movie tells the story of a hockey enforcer who strives to score just one goal in a hockey game. The film adaptation will be set in the late 1970s right before the World Hockey Association was absorbed into the NHL, “during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting.”
Smith has lined up Nicholas Braun to play Buddy, and wants John Goodman as Buddy’s first hockey coach, Michael Parks as his first pro team coach, and Kyle Gallner as Buddy’s idol, loosely based on hockey great Wayne Gretzky. Smith’s also hoping to get Melissa Leo back, “If she’s not too tired from double-fisting awards all year, GOD YES!”
In other news, Smith announced after Red State’s Sundance premiere he’ll be self-distributing the feature, which will open wide October 19, 2011, after making its way through 15 cities, one by one.
More on this as it develops.
Are you still excited about Red State despite these luke warm first reactions? Are you interested in Hit Somebody?
