There’s already work to be found in the upcoming Jack the Giant Killer and an adaptation of R.L. Stein‘s beloved Goosebumps series — now, Darren Lemke is hitting another childhood classic. THR says he’s been hired to write the feature film version of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?
Walden Media picked up the rights to the popular computer game, which then had a run as a game show back in the early ’90s. Jennifer Lopez is the current producer on this project and, obviously, could potentially star as the titular character; however, that was back in November, so things could have changed by now. Benny Medina, Simon Fileds, Nick Osbourne, Trevor Engelson, and Devin Andre are also on the long list of producers.
Here’s a little rundown of the game, if you weren’t fortunate enough to play it as a child: It centers on “Carmen Sandiego, the greatest detective at the ACME agency.” However, once she turns into the greatest thief the world has ever seen, “it’s up to former partner to follow her clues and track her down.” When their playful game “leads to a bigger mystery that implicates the agency itself, the partner questions whether Carmen is a really a thief — or a hero.”
Walden is hoping to revamp the popularity of the character, since it has been quite awhile since she was a big commodity. I’m not surprised in the slightest with the news of the feature, and with Lemke — who seems to be gaining some recognition on the family fun side of Hollywood — attached, this could be something to check out if it actually ends up getting made.
What do you think of Lemke scripting Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?
