Like any high-profile blockbuster director, the options for your next project seemingly pile up higher and higher, with the majority never seeing the light of day. For Gore Verbinski, helmer of the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films and the upcoming Lone Ranger, this is no exception. With everything from a rumored Bioshock adaptation to a new twist on Clue, there are many possibilities for his next movie and we’ve got another today.
According to Deadline, New Regency has set the director to helm and produce an adaptation of Guy Delisle’s 2007 graphic novel Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea. Scripted by Steve Conrad, who last worked with the director on The Weather Man, the film will see the Rango helmer return to his offbeat comedic roots, as we follow the story of an animator who gets entangled with a conspiracy in North Korea. Check out a synopsis of the novel below, thanks to Amazon, as we wait to hear if this will indeed be the director’s next project.
Famously referred to as one of the “Axis of Evil” countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation’s capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. Pyongyang is an informative, personal, and accessible look at a dangerous and enigmatic country.
