The first-ever look at the inner workings of Studio Ghibli, the successful Japanese animation studio, comes to life when the riveting story, The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, arrives on DVD and VOD January 27 from GKIDS, in conjunction with Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM). The film will also be available for early digital download on December 9.

Directed by Mami Sunada (Death of a Japanese Salesman), The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness provides a fascinating profile of the enigmatic and successful animation center, Studio Ghibli. Founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki, the historic studio has produced some of the world’s most successful films, such as Oscar® winner Spirited Away, the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, Princess Mononoke and Oscar® nominee The Wind Rises.

First premiering at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness will be available on DVD with bonus material, including The Kingdom According to Ushiko featurette, trailers and English subtitles.

Granted near-unfettered access to the notoriously insular Studio Ghibli, director Mami Sunada follows the three men who are the lifeblood of Ghibli – the eminent director Hayao Miyazaki, the producer Toshio Suzuki, and the elusive and influential “other director” Isao Takahata – over the course of a year as the studio rushes to complete two films, Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The result is a rare “fly on the wall” glimpse of the inner workings of one of the world’s most celebrated animation studios – creators of successful films including Princess Mononoke and the Oscar® winning Spirited Away, the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time – and an insight into the dreams, passion and singular dedication of these remarkable creators.

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness is now available on DVD.
