Last year at this time the names of Zoe Kazan and Jake Johnson were relatively unknown in the film world, but thankfully the last 12 months has proven to be a busy stretch in their respective careers. The latter star, who many likely know from New Girl, popped up briefly in 21 Jump Street, before a supporting role in Safety Not Guaranteed and the former had her writing debut in Ruby Sparks, where she also starred. The duo are now getting together for a new film and we’ve got the first look today.
Directed and written by Jenée LaMarque in her feature debut, The Pretty One also featuring Ron Livingston, John Carroll Lynch and Frances Shaw. The synopsis reads: Audrey has all of the qualities that her twin sister Laurel wishes she possessed: confidence, style, independence. When tragedy strikes, Laurel has the opportunity to reinvent herself. In a complex performance, Zoe Kazan poignantly captures Laurel’s complex mix of loss and awakening, especially as she begins a new relationship with her neighbor (Johnson).” Check out the images below.
We’ve also got the first stills from another Tribeca premiere, Bottled Up, which comes from writer/director Enid Zentelis (Evergreen). Led by Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, who has kept busy with everything from blockbusters (Oblivion, Olympus Has Fallen) to studio dramas (Prisoners, Flight), this one sees her back in the independent realm. Also starring Homeland‘s Marin Ireland and Margaret’s Josh Hamilton, check out the synopsis and images above and below.
In this modern-day drama, Leo beautifully conveys the heart-wrenching struggle that comes with loving an addict. Complaining of back pain months after a car accident, Sylvie’s (Ireland) addiction to painkillers is clear to everyone except her mother, Faye (Leo). A promising solution appears in Becket (Hamilton), but relationships and loyalty are soon tested when his feelings fall in an unexpected place.
Tribeca Film Festival 2013 kicks off on April 17th.
