Despite what that watermark would have you believe, our first true glimpse at Terry Gilliam‘s The Zero Theorem has finally emerged. The director’s first proper outing since late 2009 / early 2010’s Dr. Parnassus (mileage certainly varies on that one), it, from the outset, has sounded like a no-brainer for a man of his particular interests; given the participation of Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, David Thewlis, and Matt Damon (the lattermost in a cameo), even skeptics would consider paying a spot of attention.
Poor video quality and chunks of likely unfinished work be damned, the early results live up to some of what Theorem‘s credentials would suggest. As this appears to be a sales trailer, much in the way of graspable plot is out the window — have a look here for more on that — in its place a dollop of imagery and glances at performances that, both alike, give this the stronger impression of a wide-reaching teaser. Still, should this be a true sign of what’s to come — minus an eventually hoped-for cohesiveness — the ever-struggling Gilliam has another winner in sight.
The trailer and clips may be seen somewhere on this page, before they get taken down.
The Zero Theorem is expected to hit toward the end of this year, though possibly not before a turn at Venice.
