It’s time for some DVD love so let’s stop talking about nothing and talk about a show that’s about nothing:
Grab ‘Em Right Away
Curb Your Entusiasm: The Seventh Season
Created by: Larry David
Starring: Larry David, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis Dreyfus & Michael Richards
Why should you buy this? Because it’s the funniest season of this show since they did The Producers season with Mel Brooks. This is a show that’s always been hit-or-miss for me. But when it’s funny it’s side-splittingly hilarious. With Larry David dealing with bringing NBC a Seinfeld reunion episode (a show he and Jerry Seinfeld created together in real life) it’s insane how referential they can get when they want to be. They even reference Michael Richards’ heckling incident that occurred a couple years ago. If you like this show or even just like Seinfeld and want to see all these characters again here’s a chance to see it through the eyes of its maker and the madness behind some Larry David craziness.
Shutter Island
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Written by: Laeta Kalogridis & Dennis Lehane
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley & Jackie Earle Haley
Why should you buy this? Because it’s one of the best-directed psychological thrillers to hit theatres in about five years. Films like this survive on the cliche of ambiguity, but where other films wade in mediocrity this movie sails to victory. With a lead performance from Leonardo DiCaprio rivals so many other great turns, what makes this film special is how fully realized it is. Including a supporting cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Jackie Earle Haley, Max von Sydow, John Carroll Lynch and Michelle Williams, there’s no performance that falls flat. From Paris with Love [Check out our Blu -Ray review here]
Directed by: Pierre Morel
Written by: Adi Hasak & Luc Besson
Starring: John Travolta & Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Why should you rent this? Because you’re going to be doing coke lines off strippers’ asses after watching this movie, just hoping you can be as bad-ass as John Travolta. The list of mindless action romps that work is short, and this film is definitely one of them. The film is full of funny moments, thanks to Travolta’s over-the-top Charlie Wax. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers works for the embassy and hopes to one day be special ops agent, so they put him together with Wax as a driver of sorts and for the next few days as Travolta goes on a drug induced rampage through Paris. It’s fun and definitely worth a good night’s viewing with a bunch of friends. (read my full theatrical review here)
The Shinjuku Incident
Directed by: Tung – Shing Yee
Written by: Tin Nam Chun & Tung-Shing Yee
Starring: Jackie Chan, Naoto Takenaka, Daniel Wu & Jinglei Xu
Why should you rent this? Just to say that you’ve seen a Jackie Chan movie in which Jackie Chan isn’t a nice guy or an action kung-fu master. This is one of Jackie Chan‘s recent forays into dramatic acting, coming out of Hong Kong. He plays a Chinese emigrant who’s illegally-entered Japan. Eventually, he creates a small gang for himself in order to help the community, but as we all know it never turns out well. It’s nice to see Chan do something different, though the film is far from the best of it’s genre. However, it does make for an interesting watch at certain points. (read my full review here)
