Aside from Monsters University, it looks as though we’ll get another Disney project this summer, as Planes has landed a release date of August 9th, 2013. Veteran animator Klay Hall (The Simpsons, King of the Hill) directs the Disney Toon Studios animated pic, which was originally planned as a direct to video release. The story focuses on a cropduster named Dusty, cute. While little has been made public about the cast of Planes, since Jon Cryer dropped out as the lead, Hollywood giant Brad Garrett (Ratatouille, Finding Nemo) is listed as playing a character called Chug, not many details are known.
Despite being a Cars spinoff, the Pixar name will not be attached to the film as Planes, now ready for takeoff, will be a Disney Toon Studios. Run by Ed Catmull and John Lasseter, the duo has described Planes as “Cars takes flight”, consequentially the name of a new Disney product line to help children adjust to the transition of seeing Cars in the sky. Planes is also already reportedly a trilogy with Planes 2: Fire and Rescue in the works. Considering Disney Toon Studios will milk the franchise for every last drop, I’d expect to see Boats and Trains not too far down the line.
Do you think Planes could make a box office dent?
