3D once again proved its box office prowess this weekend, holding the top 2 spots this weekend. Tron: Legacy, the big budget Disney sequel to the 1982 cult classic, managed to snag the top spot at the box office this weekend with an impressive 43.6 million debut. The other 3D outing, Yogi Bear 3D, pulled in a soft 16.7 million for the number two spot. Last weekend’s winner, Chronicals of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, continues to underperform at number 3 with 12.4 million and a near 50 percent drop from its opening weekend.

The big story this weekend is the impressive performance of Oscar hopeful Black Swan, which managed to draw 8.3 million dollars in under a thousand screens for a $8,655 per theater average. The Fighter also held somewhat strong in wide release (2500 screens) with 12.2 million.

Both How Do You Know and Rabbit Hole brought in less-than-stellar returns over the weekend. The James L. Brooks romantic comedy, which cost $120 million to make, only made 7.6 million dollars. The Nicole Kidman comeback vehicle didn’t fare too well in limited release despite solid critical steam, bringing in only $55,000 on 5 screens for a dismal PTA of $11,000.

Opening next week is True Grit, the latest from the Coen Bros., the Jack Black most-likely monstrosity Gulliver’s Travels and the third film in the Meet The Parents saga, Little Fockers. Also look for the limited release of the Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle Country Strong and the semi-wide expansion (600 screens on Christmas) of The King’s Speech.
