As highlighted in our summer preview, David Gordon Green‘s Prince Avalanche is a welcome return to form for the filmmaker who recently had a varied three-film stint in the world of studio comedies. While that Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch road dramedy is set for a release this August, Green wrapped a project titled Joe last year and already has his next one lined up.
According to Deadline, the director already has backing from collaborators Worldview Entertainment on a new project titled Manglehorn. Co-written with Paul Logan, the film will follow our lead character A.J. Manglehorn as an older man who is tied to his daily routine, but we soon learn is an ex-con with a dark past. Producers already have their sights set on an actor, as Al Pacino is currently in talks for the role.
Green added that this is “the story of a guy who gave up the love of his life for a life of crime and now he regrets it as the world crumbles in front of him. His profession as a locksmith is symbolic of a guy who’s trying to find the key to put his life back together. It’s a love story, the choices you make in your youth and the situations you set up for yourself: you end up sitting alone at the dinner table talking to a cat! I do think there is a beautiful humor in this.” Having hopefully given Nicolas Cage his most promising role in some time with the Southern drama Joe (aiming for a fall festival debut; one can see the first look below), we’re confident that Green can do the same for Pacino.
Are you looking forward to seeing Green direct Pacino in this story?
