Aside of the excellent Martha Marcy May Marlene and the (much) less-than-excellent Red State, there was another cult film, one that seemed to fly under the radar, at Sundance 2011: Zal Batmanglij‘s Sound of My Voice. We caught up with the film starring Brit Marling (Another Earth, Arbitrage) at SXSW, where we called it “completely realistic, completely plausible with “a looming sense of uneasiness buried beneath the surface that keeps you unnerved and engulfed. It’s movies like this that make film festivals worth going to.”

Picked up by Fox Searchlight, they are finally releasing it this spring and have posted the first footage today. Instead of a trailer, they’ve debuted the first two minutes of the film; something that I think is a great idea and shows faith in the material. I’m already hooked with this tease and can’t wait to see more. Check it out below via Apple.

Update: Fox Searchlight has now posted the first ten minutes. The embed takes awhile to load, but check it out below.

Synopsis:

In SOUND OF MY VOICE, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a couple and documentary filmmaking team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, Peter and Lorna start to question their objective and each other as they unravel the secrets of Maggie’s underworld.

Sound of My Voice hits theaters April 27th, 2012.
