The guy that gave us Glee: The 3D Concert Movie and the Fame remake has been hired to deliver a feature film reboot of Mortal Kombat. That idea may seem odd at first, but Kevin Tancharoen recently spearheaded the web series based on the popular 1990s videogame. The seven-minute Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film arrived in spring 2011 (can be streamed below), which then led to a 10-episode series, and it looks like it has paid off.

Deadline and THR report that New Line has hired Tancharoen to direct and Oren Uziel (who penned Rebirth) to write the reboot, but there are no details on actors or story yet. We only know this will not be a continuation of the web series, which starred Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan and brought in millions and millions of viewers.

We still have yet to get a videogame adaptation that knocks it out of the park, and it will hard to elevate Mortal Kombat outside of its fighting genre, but Tancharoen is clearly passionate about this project. Uziel also has the right mind for this one, giving us the still unproduced screenplay of The Kitchen Sink, which features vampirees, zombies and aliens in a high school. Check out the style we can expect below with Rebirth.
