Following yesterday’s news that Michael Fassbender gave major cred to an Assassin’s Creed adaptation, by joining as star and producer, Hollywood is heating up yet again with more videogame properties. While no major talent has been assigned to the project yet, a studio is in talks to bring Square Enix’s Deus Ex to the screen. [Variety]

The relatively young CBS Films has bought the rights to the franchise and this film will be based specifically around 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which was a prequel to the 2000 original. I’ve only played the latter, but I distinctly remember a strong story, with great mix of first-person action and an added element of role-playing. I hope producers Roy Lee (The Departed, The Woman in Black) and Adrian Askarieh – who is behind many other videogame adaptations including the previous Hitman and the upcoming Just Cause and Kane & Lynch – can break the mold with a worthy feature.

Working closely with Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal, it’s interesting to see CBS Films expand into more blockbuster territory. Faster and The Mechanic didn’t exactly light up the box-office or critics, but they’ve got two highly promising fall features, Martin McDonagh‘s In Bruges follow-up Seven Psychopaths and Coens-scripted Gambit. Check out a synopsis of the latest Deus Ex game below, while we anticipate more info.

Game is set in 2027, when multinational corporations have grown beyond the control of national governments. Film will follow an ex-SWAT security specialist who must learn to embrace the high-tech prostheses that replace much of his body in order to unravel a global conspiracy that involves an attack on a biotechnology firm tied to developing human enhancements.
