The Martian VFX

One of the consistently enjoyable aspects of VFX breakdown videos, a popular item every Oscar season, is that you don’t need to have enjoyed either the film in question or its broken-down effects to wring some amusement from them. Or seen the movies, for that matter. Even having only sat through the entirety of one title featured in this countdown (Mad Max: Fury Road), I was captivated by how CGI-heavy movies (e.g. The Martian, Jurassic World, Ant-Man, and Everest) can render worlds, convincingly or not, while another (Straight Outta Compton) builds one in small strokes that need not be noticed in the moment. It’s not often that a blockbuster’s climax is light on computer-generated work, so be forewarned that almost all of these contain material that could be considered spoilers. In any case:
