The general perception of Paul W.S. Anderson‘s bombastic, symmetrical-composition-heavy cinema has changed enough in the four years since the last Resident Evil film that to be entirely skeptical of it seems an outmoded form of thinking — or something along lines I can’t entirely remember since the great vulgar auteurism wars took many lives in 2013. (If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, at least know that I am really, truly envious.) Resident Evil: The Final Chapter nevertheless looks like the series’ other installments in both palette and form, which is to say that Milla Jovovich jumping and shooting in murky environments is on full, vivid-depending-on-your-perspective display.
But, God, what else is there to say about a new trailer? You’re either waiting with bated breath or staying the hell away. Or you’re like me and find various compositions / moments interesting enough to think the series is worth investigating — if not in time for this film’s January release.
Watch the preview below:
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter arrives on January 27.
