With its March 17 theatrical release fast approaching from Broad Green Pictures, Terrence Malick’s third feature in three years — after Knight of Cups and Voyage of Time — Song to Song has finally graced us with a trailer.
The Austin-set drama is but a part of what’s been an active few years for Malick. In addition to shooting three narrative features, the filmmaker produced twin documentaries (Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience and Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey), approved a Criterion restoration of his 2005 film The New World (with The Tree of Life rumored to arrive this summer), and even appeared in person for a rare on-stage conversation. (And, best of all, yet another new feature may be premiering by year’s end.)
Malick’s latest boasts a major ensemble cast, led by Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman, who round out a typically star-studded list of players — commonplace for recent Malick pictures. It also features the likes of Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro, Cate Blanchett, and Holly Hunter, while Christian Bale could possibly be seen on screen, providing his work (three or four days on set) doesn’t wind up on the cutting room floor. As we await the premiere, check out its first trailer below.
In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.
Song to Song, originally titled Lawless in 2012 and Weightless most recently, will have its world premiere at SXSW March 10 and hit theaters on March 17.
