We’ll chalk it up as a mere coincidence, but following the sad news this week that Tom Clancy has departed, our first poster for his next film adaptation landed. It looks like Paramount is going full steam ahead with its marketing campaign, as the first trailer has arrives a day later. In this franchise reboot of sorts, titled Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the film features the studio’s Star Trek star, Chris Pine, taking up the lead role, with Kenneth Branagh directing.
The Thor director is also playing our lead villain, a Russian businessman who makes plans to crash the United States economy with the power of technology and insider intelligence. Keira Knightley figures in as Jack Ryan’s wife, a doctor, while Kevin Costner takes the role of a know-it-all, advisor-type. The first trailer looks fairly thrilling, but has some possible spoilers, so check it out below with caution, along with the poster if you missed it.
The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that’s more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit opens on December 25th, 2013.
